Frequently Asked Questions - Automatic

Automatics are easier to drive than manual cars: as the name says, they do a lot of the work for you.

If you have an automatic (A) condition on your licence you must not drive a manual transmission vehicle. If you want to learn to drive a manual transmission vehicle you must: be supervised by a person who has held an open licence for at least 1 year in that class. display L plates on the vehicle while learning.

100 hours under supervision, including 10 hours of night driving, and you must be at least 17 years old. Did you know that each lesson (up to 10 lessons)  with an accredited driver trainer counts for three hours of driver training.

This depends on your personal preference and ability level. It is important to keep in mind any licensing requirements you may need for work opportunities (Most trade vehicles are manual). If your not sure speak to your driving instructor to find out what is best for you.
